Respond to Erroneous E-mails
If you have an e-mail address then you are sure to be on the mass e-mail list of someone, a friend, a relative, a co-worker, a total stranger who periodically sends you jokes, amusing videos of a cat playing the piano, warnings about computer viruses, or the email equivalent of a chain letter. Some of these brighten our day, others clog our inbox or are quickly deleted. But some of these emails spread misinformation. Should you just ignore them and press the delete key? Consider taking the opportunity to set the record straight.
If you are an authority on the truth of the matter you could draft your own response/correction or you could use the resources of a web site dedicated to setting the record straight such as www.factcheck.org, Fight the Smears, or Snopes.com. When you draft your response you should select the 'reply all' option. That way all the other recipients of the original message will receive the correction. The person you sent you the message may not be interested in the truth but at least you will setting the record straight for everyone else who got the message.
